Tis’ the Season

Every month there are different fruits and vegetables that are considered to be in season. August is the start of the season for cauliflowers, cucumbers, herbs, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins. Other fruits and vegetable that are considered to be in season during the month of August include:

  • Carrots
  • Corn
  • Eggplant
  • Garlic
  • Grapes
  • Green Beans
  • Lemons
  • Melons
  • Mushrooms
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries
  • Tomatoes

There are multiple benefits for choosing in season produce. Since the produce is in season, it means local stores have these fruits and vegetables in bulk; which means consumers can purchase these healthy foods at a lower price. Along with lower cost to the consumer, the produce is usually better tasting when in season. Also buying seasonal fruits and vegetables means that you are supporting local farmers and reducing CO2 emissions.

Where to get Recipes:

Many times when you purchase local produce from farmers markets, they offer ideas and recipes for the in season produce. Also one of my favorite recipe books is Weight Watcher’s Fruits & Vegetables A to Z. In the book, the offer three recipe for each fruit and vegetable, as well as informing you when that produce is in season, how to choose the best one, and how to store it.   1. I admit that I have never really payed much attention to in-season fruits or vegetables or the benefits of buying them, but your post was very informative in this aspect. Also, since you mentioned that it is cheaper to purchase these foods in season, this may be highlighted in a potential public health campaign that targets healthy eating or fighting obesity. The prices of foods (as well as preparation time) are usually a main concern for those who want to eat healthy, but do not have the time or money, and therefore, they turn to unhealthy, fast food. Promoting fruits and vegetables and giving quick, easy recipes that utilize them to these target audiences could be a great way to encourage healthy eating and benefit local farmers and the environment.

  2. What a coincidence I had cauliflower and cucumbers with my meal yesterday! I did not realize some of the importance of buying vegetables in season. Especially that they are cheaper! One of my friends fathers has a garden and had us over the other day and I believe you can really taste the difference. I eat most my vegetables raw because of preparation time. I might purchase the book you recommended for tips to spice up my diet.

  3. This is a great post! I love how you list which vegetables and fruits are in season when fruits and vegetables are out of season they are extremely higher than when they are in season, I have experienced this while shopping. There are many healthy recipes that can use these ingredients and consumers can get them at a lower price. Its good to know what is available and affordable that will still allow u to eat healthy.
